On Saturday, the Christian community in the Erbil’s Christian-majority Ankawa district collected over 600 food baskets, 100 boxes of winter clothing, 500 winter blankets, 200 sleeping mattresses, and various supplies for children in Western Kurdistan (northern Syria).
Erbil Archbishop Bashar Matti Warda also participated in the campaign.
The humanitarian institutions that were part of the campaign were affiliated with the Chaldean Archdiocese of Erbil, namely the Ankawa Humanitarian Committee and the Chaldean Mercy Association.
All collected aid was delivered to both the Erbil Joint Crisis Coordination Center and the Barzani Charity Foundation, to complete the procedures for transportation and distribution to beneficiaries in Western Kurdistan (northern Syria).
In a statement, the Ankawa Humanitarian Organization and the Chaldean Mercy Association extend their deep gratitude and appreciation to all donors, volunteers, and supporters who contributed to the success of this campaign.
“[We] highly commend this humanitarian giving, rooted in faith and fraternal responsibility, which reflects the authentic values of love, mercy, and solidarity,” the organizations stated.
According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, more than 170,000 people have been displaced across Aleppo, al-Hasakeh, and ar-Raqqa governorates since early January, with large concentrations in Qamishli and al-Malikiyah districts.
They were displaced due to the heavy fighting between the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and the Syrian Arab Army that started earlier this month after negotiations between the two sides broke down.
According to the UN, displacement patterns indicate a strong concentration in Qamishli District, hosting an estimated 97,900 internally displaced persons (IDPs), followed by al-Malikiyah District with approximately 32,000 IDPs. The report did mention Kurdish civilians that were displaced in the town of Kobani.
On January 30, the SDF and Damascus reached a comprehensive agreement to stop the fighting, including a fragile ceasefire and the first stages of a gradual process to integrate military and administrative forces between the two sides.
