On Friday, U.S. Special Envoy for Syria Ambassador Tom Barrack thanked President Masoud Barzani for facilitating today’s agreement between the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and the Syrian government.

President Barzani expressed his appreciation to U.S. President Donald Trump and to all parties involved in resolving differences through dialogue. He welcomed the January 30 agreement as an important step toward advancing peace.

President Barzani also thanked Ambassador Barrack, commending his significant role in helping to secure these understandings and in promoting stability and peace in the region, particularly in Syria.

“We welcome the agreement between the Syrian government and the SDF and extend our congratulations to both sides. We hope that this agreement will be lasting and successful. We have always believed that dialogue and peace are the right path to resolving problems and disputes,” President Barzani said in a statement.

“We hope that this will finally bring an end to the suffering and hardship of the Kurdish people in Syria, and that all parties will enjoy peace, freedom, and stability in Syria.”

On January 30, the SDF and Damascus reached a comprehensive agreement “on a gradual process to integrate military and administrative forces between the two sides.”

The agreement came after nearly a month of heavy fighting that erupted on January 6, following the collapse of negotiations between the Kurds and Damascus, with the fighting starting in Aleppo, then spreading to Raqqa, Deir ez-Zur, and eventually core Kurdish areas in Hasakah and Kobani.

“The agreement includes the withdrawal of military forces from contact lines, the entry of Internal Security Forces affiliated with the Ministry of Interior into the centers of the cities of Hasakah and Qamishli, and the start of the process of integrating security forces in the region,” the SDF said in a statement.

“It also provides for the formation of a military division comprising three brigades from the SDF, in addition to the formation of a Kobani brigade within a division affiliated with Aleppo Governorate.

“The agreement further includes the integration of Autonomous Administration institutions into Syrian state institutions, with civilian employees remaining in their positions. It also stipulates the settlement of the civil and educational rights of the Kurdish people and guarantees the return of displaced persons to their areas.”

Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Prime Minister Masrour Barzani also welcomed the agreement between the Syrian government and the SDF in a post on X.

“I hope it will be expanded and lead to greater peace, freedom, stability, and progress across Syria. It should ensure the legitimate rights of all communities and pave the way for the dignified return of refugees.

“Kurdistanis united in support around the world, and President Barzani’s role in ending tensions and opening a path of dialogue, make us proud. We appreciate @POTUS, the U.S. government and Congress, and our allies for supporting the rights of all Syrian components for stability.”

On Friday, Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani also welcomed the agreement “aimed at halting hostilities, integrating military and administrative institutions, safeguarding the civil and educational rights of the Kurdish people, and facilitating the return of the refugees to their homes.

“This agreement represents a right and significant step toward achieving a peaceful resolution and bringing the conflict to an end. We have consistently emphasized that dialogue, mutual understanding, and political solutions are the sole pathways to reaching a sustainable resolution that serves the interests of all parties.

“The agreement will lay a solid foundation for stability, social harmony, and peaceful coexistence among the communities. We are hopeful that it will pave the way for the reconstruction of a unified Syria, the protection of the rights of the Kurds and all communities in the forthcoming constitution, and the achievement of peace for Syria and the wider region.”

Ilham Ahmed, Co-Chair of the Executive Council’s Foreign Relations Department, told reporters on Friday that the KRG played a key role in the agreement.

“We had meetings and they were the witnesses. [They were]the supporters of this agreement, and also [facilitated and supported] the dialogue that we had [with Damascus and the United States],” she explained.
