Kurdish Leaders Discuss Parliament Elections With UNAMI Head

Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Prime Minister Masrour Barzani on Tuesday received Mohamed al-Hassan, the newly appointed Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Iraq and Head of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI).

Prime Minister Barzani congratulated Special Representative al-Hassan on assuming his new role and reaffirmed the KRG’s commitment to supporting him in his mission to promote peace and stability in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region.

According to the readout of the Prime Minister’s office, Special Representative al-Hassan acknowledged the growth and development of the Kurdistan Region, describing it as a model for other parts of Iraq. 

He also confirmed the UN’s willingness to deepen cooperation with the KRG and discussed preparations for the upcoming parliamentary elections in the Kurdistan Region, underlining the importance of ensuring a calm, fair, and transparent election process, free from external interference.

They also addressed Iraq’s national census, scheduled for November 20, and Prime Minister Barzani reiterated the KRG’s support for the census, provided it serves all the people of Iraq and is not manipulated for political purposes.

Additionally, Kurdistan Democratic Party President Masoud Barzani, on October 15, also met with UNAMI Head al-Hassan in the town of Salahaddin and discussed the relations between the Kurdistan Region and the Iraqi federal government.

According to the Barzani Headquarters, they discussed the upcoming Kurdistan parliamentary elections and reiterated the need for them to be conducted in a calm and transparent atmosphere.

In a separate meeting, Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani on Tuesday also met with UNAMI Head al-Hassan and reaffirmed the Kurdistan Region’s support for the success of UNAMI’s mission.

During the meeting, President Barzani also underscored the importance of fostering peace and stability throughout Iraq, while also highlighting the need to enhance the conditions for the Yezidi community and to support the safe return of the displaced people to their original homes.
