On Wednesday, U.S.-based businessman Sezgin Baran Korkmaz announced that he had sent the 5 million Turkish lira bonus he had promised the Kurdish club Amedspor following the club’s 3-0 victory over Erzurumspor on August 16.
Before the match, Korkmaz announced on social media that he would give Amedspor a 5 million lira bonus if they won. After the game, he said the money would be transferred to the club’s accounts during the week.
“We would like to thank esteemed businessman Sezgin Baran Korkmaz for the 5 million lira donation and solidarity he provided to our Amedspor team following our 3-0 victory over Erzurumspor,” Kazakhstani-Kurdish businesswoman and banking executive Narin Nadirova, an Amedspor board member, posted on X.
“I am an Amedspor supporter, and I don’t think there is anything more natural or right than supporting my own club. As long as I am able and have the means to do so, I will continue to support my club,” Korkmaz told Kurdistan Chronicle.
“My support is not limited to Amedspor either. I also support other teams in the region as much as I can, and I will continue to do so for as long as my circumstances allow.”
In May, Amedspor was promoted to the highest Turkish football league, also known as the Super League, leading to mass celebrations among Kurds.
The match against Erzurumspor was attended by high-level Turkish officials including Türkiye’s Minister of Interior Mustafa Çiftçi, as well as numerous members of parliament, including from Kurdish parties.
