On Monday, Kurdish and Iraqi political leaders condemned the Iranian drone attacks targeting the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Prime Minister’s Office and the residence of the head of the region’s security and intelligence agency earlier that day.
“We strongly condemn the drone attack carried out in the early hours of Monday, August 17, 2026, from the Iranian side of the border, targeting the Prime Minister’s office and the residence of the Director of the Protection Agency in Pirmam,” the Barzani headquarters stated.
“The Kurdistan Region has never been a party to the wars and tensions taking place in the region. Such unlawful attacks, which have no justification whatsoever, constitute an attempt to undermine the stability of the Kurdistan Region. There is no doubt that the use of drones and missiles will not provide a solution to the problems.”
Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani also strongly condemned the attacks, calling them unacceptable and a dangerous escalation.“We call on the Federal Government to fulfill its responsibilities and constitutional obligations to safeguard the security and stability of the country and to prevent the recurrence of such acts of aggression.
“Safeguarding the sovereignty, security, and stability of Iraq, including the Kurdistan Region, is a shared responsibility, and all parties must collaborate to ease tensions and prevent further escalation.”
KRG Deputy Prime Minister Qubad Talabani also condemned the attacks.
“The Kurdistan Region has consistently maintained a clear position of supporting peace and neutrality amid regional conflicts. Such attacks violate this position and constitute a serious breach of Iraq’s sovereignty,” he underlined.
The spokesperson of the Islamic Kurdistan Justice Group condemned the attacks on institutions of the Kurdistan Region, and reaffirmed “our commitment to the Kurdish position of neutrality and balance regarding the wars and conflicts in the region.”
Khamis al-Khanjar, head of the Sovereignty Alliance, called the drone attacks “an extremely dangerous development, an attack on the sovereignty of Iraq and the security of the Kurdistan Region, and a threat to state institutions and their leaders.
“We call on the international community to assume its responsibilities in stopping Iranian attacks against its Arab neighbors and the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, and to put an end to the use of drones and missiles as tools for political blackmail and undermining the sovereignty of states.
“Protecting the Kurdistan Region is an Iraqi and national responsibility, and its security is part of the security of the entire country. Hence, a serious Iraqi and international stance is necessary to put an end to the repeated attacks on the region, which have become a threat to its security and the security of Iraq as a whole.”
The Christian Alliance also strongly condemned today’s drone attacks.
“These attacks represent a dangerous escalation, a violation of the security and sovereignty of the Kurdistan Region, and a direct threat to the security and stability of both the Kurdistan Region and Iraq,” the group said.
“Such attacks will not weaken the determination of the Kurdistan Region or its institutions. We stand firmly with the KRG and the people of Kurdistan in defending peace, stability, security, and the sovereignty of our land.”
In a post on X, Syrian Democratic Forces Commander-in-Chief Mazloum Abdi stated that he stands in solidarity with the KRG and its people, and “strongly [condemns] the targeting of the Prime Minister’s Office.
“This targeting is an unacceptable and immoral act, and constitutes an attack on the will of the people of the region and on an essential part of Iraq’s state institutions.”
