Daffodils, also known by the scientific name Narcissus, are not only a harbinger of spring and the Kurdish holiday of Newroz, but are also historically and medically significant. They are well-known for their striking beauty and elegant fragrance.

Kurds have known and cultivated daffodils for over 2,700 years. They are a symbol of love and friendship and a common gift across Kurdistan. Their significance, elegance, and fragrance have made them a source of income for many people in mountainous areas.

Characteristics of daffodils

Several species of daffodils grow in the mountains and plains of Greater Kurdistan. The most widespread species in the Kurdistan Region bears white and yellow flowers and symbolizes revival and struggle for the Kurds.

Benefits

In addition to its beauty and fragrance, daffodils have many important uses:

Calming fragrance: Their soothing scent helps calm emotional agitation and anxiety and promotes better sleep.

Perfumes and cosmetics: Daffodils are also used to make high-quality perfumes and are included in cosmetic products such as creams and makeup.

Decoration: Placing daffodils in a vase indoors can help brighten a space. They also add a pleasant fragrance to indoor spaces.

Medicine: Historically, daffodils have been used in traditional medicine to treat skin conditions like psoriasis. However, one must be cautious, as their bulbs and stems contain toxic substances and must not be taken orally.

Vital warning!

Daffodils must never be ingested, as they contain lycorine, a toxic substance that can cause nausea and poisoning.

Planting and care

Planting time

Daffodils are seasonal flowers. The best time to plant is at the end of the fall, between October and November, so that they can grow and blossom at the beginning of spring.

Planting method

Container: Use one with drainage holes to prevent rot.

Soil: Use loose, well-draining soil (a mix of loam and peat moss works well).

Depth: The bulbs should be planted head-side down about 2-3 cm under soil. The distance between them should be about 5-10 cm.

Care and protection

Light: Daffodils prefer good exposure to light. Place in a spot that receives at least six hours of daily sunlight.

Watering: Water when the soil becomes dry. Be careful not to overwater, as the bulb may rot.

Temperature: Daffodils prefer a cool place. If indoors, keep the plant away from radiators or heaters.

After blossoming: When the flower fades, do not remove the green leaves until they turn dry and yellow; at this stage, the bulb stores energy for the next year.

Quick Tip: If you want your daffodils to produce more blooms, place the pot in a location where it can receive fresh air, such as near a window. This also helps the fragrance spread indoors.
