On Friday, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Department of Foreign Relations rejected allegations circulated by judicial institutions and official media outlets in the Islamic Republic of Iran that individuals sentenced in Iran had received training from foreign intelligence entities within the territory of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.
“The KRG rejects these allegations and emphasizes that there are no headquarters, facilities, or training centers affiliated with any foreign intelligence service operating within the Kurdistan Region. Linking the Kurdistan Region to such matters is unfounded and does not reflect the reality on the ground,” the KRG Department of Foreign Relations said.
“The Kurdistan Region also expresses its serious concern over the continued circulation of such claims, particularly at a time when the region as a whole requires greater restraint, dialogue, and responsible engagement. Narratives of this nature risk creating unnecessary tension and may contribute to developments that endanger civilians, public infrastructure, and the broader stability that the Kurdistan Region has worked thoroughly to preserve.”
The statement comes amid ongoing drone attacks on the Kurdistan Region, despite the U.S.-Iran ceasefire that went into effect on April 8.
“For many years, the Kurdistan Region has remained committed to being a factor of stability, moderation, and coexistence within Iraq and the wider region. In full respect of the Iraqi Constitution and in line with the principles of good neighborly relations, the Kurdistan Regional Government reaffirms its consistent commitment that the territory of the Kurdistan Region should not be used in any manner that undermines the security and safety of neighboring states,” the KRG Department of Foreign Relations said.
The KRG also called on Baghdad to uphold its constitutional responsibilities in protecting Iraqi sovereignty and preventing violations against the territory of the Kurdistan Region.
Additionally, the KRG called on the international community “to support efforts that promote de-escalation, respect for sovereignty, and the protection of civilians, in the interest of preserving regional peace and security.
“The people of the Kurdistan Region have endured decades of conflict, suffering, and sacrifice in pursuit of peace, dignity, and constitutional rights. For this reason, the KRG remains steadfast in its commitment to responsible governance, the protection of its people, and the advancement of constructive and peaceful relations with neighboring countries and international partners alike.”
“While the ceasefire between the United States and Iran appears to be holding, drone and missile attacks on the Kurdistan Region continue. Drone strikes have been reported in several parts of Kurdistan tonight,” the Kurdistan Democratic Party Department of Foreign Relations said on Friday.
Since February 28, a total of 21 people have been killed in missile and drone strikes carried out on the Kurdistan Region by Iran and Iranian-backed Iraqi armed groups.
