Global Community Continues to Denounce Attack on Kurdistan Region President Residence

On Sunday, several countries, including Saudi Arabia, the UK, Palestine, Qatar, and Jordan – as well as international and regional organizations such as the UN and the Arab League – condemned Saturday’s attack on the residence of Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani.


President Nechirvan Barzani received several calls including from UK Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs Yvette Cooper and Secretary-General of the Arab League Ahmed Aboul Gheit, who strongly condemned the attack on the President’s residence. Moreover, he received a letter from Jordan’s King Abdullah II bin al-Hussein condemning the attack.


In a post on X, the UK Embassy in Iraq called for a rapid de-escalation to protect stability in Iraq, including the Kurdistan Region.


Several foreign ministries of Gulf countries also condemned the attack. Saudi Arabia not only condemned the targeting of the residency of President Nechirvan Barzani, but also the attacks on the residence of President Masoud Barzani and all attacks targeting the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.


Moreover, Qatar strongly condemned the attack and reiterated its firm stance against violence, terrorism, and criminal acts. 


UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also strongly condemned the drone attack and called on all actors to reject violence in all its forms and to work to prevent any attempts to destabilize Iraq.


Palestine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates also condemned the attack and expressed its full solidarity with the Republic of Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, reaffirming its unwavering position in supporting Iraq’s stability and promoting its development and prosperity.

In a statement on Saturday, President Masoud Barzani underlined that Baghdad must take firm measures to stop the unjust attacks on the Kurdistan Region or acknowledge their failure to stop these attacks, adding that since February 28, the Kurdistan Region has faced more than 450 missile and drone attacks, including five that targeted his headquarters.
