President Barzani Calls on Baghdad to Stop Attacks on Kurdistan

After Saturday’s attack on Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani’s residence, President Masoud Barzani underlined that Baghdad must take firm measures to stop the unjust attacks on the Kurdistan region or acknowledge their failure to stop these attacks.

“The Kurdistan Region has never been part of the conflicts, tensions, and wars in the region. Unfortunately, however, there are some who, without any restraint, focus primarily on how and by what means to act against the Kurdistan Region, repeatedly and unjustly targeting the Region and the Peshmerga, and posing a threat to the lives and stability of the people of Kurdistan,” he said.

“Over the past years, they have dozens of times unjustly and without justification attacked the Kurdistan Region and Peshmerga positions with drones and missiles, killing and injuring innocent civilians,” President Barzani said.

Furthermore, he said since the start of this war on February 28,the Kurdistan Region has faced more than 450 missile and drone attacks against the Kurdistan Region and the bases of the Kurdistan Peshmerga forces.

“During this period alone, they have attacked our headquarters five times, yet we remained silent so as not to create panic and anger among the public. Yesterday, in the city of Duhok, they targeted the residence of the President of the Region with a drone. The issue is not about a house or a headquarters—every place in Kurdistan and every home in Kurdistan is of value to us.”

President Barzani underlined that these attacks “cannot be resolved merely through condemnations, phone calls, statements, or committees. The Iraqi authorities must clarify their position: either they acknowledge that they are unable to prevent these unlawful groups, or they must act seriously to uphold the state and take firm measures to prevent further unjust attacks on the Kurdistan Region.”

“Here, we reaffirm that the people of Kurdistan, with a steel-like will, will defend their message of peace and their just cause. No threat, attack, or enemy has been able, nor will be able, to break this will.”
