On Wednesday, Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani spoke with Iran’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Abbas Araghchi and underlined that the Kurdistan Region is not part of the conflict between Israel, the United States and Iran.
According to the readout, Kurdistan Region President highlighted that the Kurdistan Region will not be part of the conflict and will continue to be a factor of peace, supporting diplomatic efforts to ease tensions and protect the peoples of the region from the threat of war.
Furthermore, the phone call covered the bilateral ties between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Kurdistan Region, touching on recent regional developments and their broader implications. Both parties underscored the significance of maintaining peace and stability.
They also stressed the importance of upholding border security to prevent efforts that could destabilize the region and escalate tensions further.
Since the beginning of the conflict between the United States, Israel, and Iran on Saturday, there has been an increase in drone and missile attacks on the Kurdistan Region, as well as reports that Iranian Kurdish opposition parties may join the war.
In a post on X on Thursday, Kurdistan Democratic Party senior politburo member Hemin Hawrami underlined that international media reports that Iraqi Kurds are arming and supporting Iranian Kurdish opposition groups to cross into Iran for an armed struggle “is incorrect and false.”
“We are not a part of this war and our goal is to preserve,maintain peace and security of our region and beyond. In the meantime, we condemn these unjustifiable attacks on Kurdistan and call on the international community to help us and stop this aggression and protect our region.”
During an event on Tuesday, Kurdistan Regional Government Prime Minister Mansrour Barzani said it is “unfortunate that our region has once again been struck by such hardship. Even more troubling is that in recent days, certain outlawed terrorist elements have targeted Erbil.”
