On Thursday, when asked about the strategic relationship between the Kurds and the United States, U.S. Vice President JD Vance told reporters that U.S. President Donald Trump loves the Kurds.
“We have a great relationship with the Kurds. The President loves the Kurds. I know that the entire administration [has] had great contacts and great friendships with the Kurdish people in various countries all over the world.
“Our attitude is we want those people to be able to live in peace and harmony and prosperity with their neighbors. We’ve pursued a foreign policy of peace, in part because we want the Kurdish people, but also the Arab people who live there, the Jewish people who live there, the Christians, we want everybody to be able to live in peace, and that has been the main focus of our policy in Syria. It’s been the main focus of our policy really all over the world.”

The Kurdistan Region has a strong political, economical and security relationship with the United States, as shown by the opening of the largest U.S. consulate in the world in Erbil in December last year.

He noted that without U.S. support in 1991, it would not have been possible to safeguard the achievements of the uprising, the Kurdistan Regional Government, and the Kurdistan Region Parliament.

In a meeting in Erbil on February 23, U.S. Ambassador to Turkey and Special Envoy for Syria Tom Barrack praised President Barzani’s role in helping to prevent the spread of war and violence in Syria. Heavy fighting took place last month between Syria’s Kurds and Syrian government forces until an agreement supported by the Kurdistan Region of Iraq was reached on January 30.
Ambassador Barrack added that Iraq could benefit from President Barzani’s wisdom and guidance in addressing its challenges, and in a later post on X said he had received “wonderful wisdom from a legendary leader.”
