On Monday, President Masoud Barzani met with the presidency of the Kurdish National Council (KNC) and underlined the importance of Kurdish unity in Syria.
According to a readout from the Barzani Headquarters, President Barzani stressed that negotiations and dialogue are necessary to resolve outstanding issues.
The call for unity among Kurdish parties in Syria comes amid local news reports from the ANHA news agency suggesting that a unified Kurdish delegation will soon visit Damascus.
However, Shalal Gado, a member of the KNC leadership, told Kurdistan Chronicle, that while there are ongoing talks, it has not yet been decided if a joint delegation will go to Damascus.

In April 2025, the Kurdish Unity and Solidarity Conference took place in Syria with the support of President Barzani.
During the conference, participants from the KNC and the Democratic Union Party agreed to form a joint Kurdish delegation to hold talks with Damascus.
On February 3, Syria’s President Ahmad al-Sharaa also met with a delegation from the KNC, and reaffirmed the state’s commitment to guaranteeing the rights of Kurdish citizens within the framework of the constitution, SANA reported.
In a statement, the KNC said that they called for a democratic Syria for all Syrians, and the guarantee of the national rights of the Kurdish people within a unified Syria.
The KNC also welcomed the January 16 Syrian Presidential Decree No. 13 on Kurdish cultural rights as a positive and important step, calling for its completion and the inclusion of the national rights of the Kurdish people in the Syrian constitution, recognizing its multi-ethnic and multi-religious identity, thus ensuring justice and equality for all its components.

In January, heavy fighting erupted between the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and Damascus, which stopped after Damascus and the SDF reached an agreement that was publicly announced on January 30.
Since then, political efforts, especially by President Barzani, have focused on keeping the peace and ensuring the implementation of the agreement.

On Sunday, President Barzani held a phone call with Tom Barrack, U.S. Special Envoy to Syria and Ambassador to Turkey, in which the two officials agreed that all efforts should be taken to prevent further conflict in Syria.

Last Friday, President Barzani also received a delegation headed by SDF Commander-in-Chief General Mazloum Abdi and urged the SDF and Damascus to implement the recent ceasefire agreement.
