Over the weekend, President Masoud Barzani held separate telephone conversations with Commander-in Chief of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) General Mazloum Abdi and Syria’s President Ahmad al‑Sharaa on the importance of implementing the agreement between Damascus and the SDF.
During the call with President al-Sharaa on Saturday, the two officials discussed “the situation in Syria and the latest developments, including the agreement between the Syrian government and the SDF and the next steps going forward,” the Barzani headquarters said.
“Both sides emphasized the importance of strengthening the foundations of peace and stability in Syria.”
According to the Syrian state news agency SANA, President al-Sharaa affirmed the Syrian state’s commitment to the national, political, and civil rights of the Kurds, emphasizing that all Syrians are equal before the law and enjoy equal rights.
Moreover, during the phone call between President Barzani and General Abdi, the two officials emphasized the importance of resolving outstanding issues through dialogue and reiterated the need to establish peace and stability in Syria.
The Kurdish leadership in the Kurdistan Region, and especially President Barzani, have played a major role in easing tensions between Damascus and the SDF and finding a solution after heavy fighting erupted between the two groups in early January.
On January 30, the SDF and Damascus reached a comprehensive agreement “on a gradual process to integrate military and administrative forces between the two sides.
”On Sunday, leaders of the Syrian government-linked International Security Forces visited Kobani and al-Hasakah to discuss the agreement and the entry of Syrian Interior Ministry forces on Monday.
The Asayish, a Kurdish security force in northern Syria, also released a statement on Sunday saying that they will implement a curfew in al-Hasakah and Qamishli city to prevent any issues.
