The investigative committee probing the November 26 attack on the Khor Mor gas field presented its findings on Wednesday and outlined how the assault was carried out, identified those responsible, and recommended a series of security measures, all of which were approved by Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani.
The committee – led by Iraqi Minister of Interior Abdul Amir al-Shammari and bringing together senior federal and Kurdistan Region security chiefs and a broad technical team from military, intelligence, and forensic agencies – began its work on November 28 to determine who carried out the attack and how it was executed.
The committee concluded that the attack was carried out using two drones that were launched from the south of the field, from areas east of the Tuz Khurmatu district in Saladin Governorate. This attack marks the 11th targeting of this gas field from the aforementioned area.
Furthermore, the perpetrators of this attack have been identified. “They are outlaws, and judicial arrest warrants have already been issued for several of them. Security forces are currently pursuing them,” Sabah al-Numan, Spokesperson for the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, said in a statement on Wednesday.
The committee also issued a series of security recommendations – now adopted by both Baghdad and Erbil – to safeguard the Khor Mor gas field. These include redeploying forces in the eastern part of the Saladin Governorate to close security gaps, replacing local security leadership with more capable commanders, and strengthening intelligence coordination between federal and Kurdistan Region agencies. It further called for installing air-defense systems at the site, tightening controls on drone use, and forming a joint judicial-security committee to follow up on the investigation.
“The committee’s work remains ongoing until all individuals involved in this attack, aimed at targeting Iraq’s sovereignty and economic wealth, are apprehended. This dangerous terrorist act seeks to obstruct and delay the efforts underway to establish security and economic stability. It will not go unpunished, and firm legal measures will be taken against all perpetrators,” al-Numan concluded.
