Dwin Nawzad: Turning Passion into Impact

Art has always been more than just colors on a canvas for me – it is my way of expressing myself and reflecting the world around me. My name is Dwin Nawzad and I am a self-taught artist born in Erbil, Kurdistan, in 2001. My artistic journey began at the age of 12, when I first picked up a pencil and started drawing, unaware that this passion would one day define my identity. I have never attended an art school or received formal training, yet through relentless practice, dedication, and self-exploration, I have nurtured my craft into something deeply meaningful.

Despite my passion for art, my academic path took a different turn. In 2023, I graduated from the Department of Medical Microbiology at Hawler Medical University. Science and art may seem like two different worlds, but for me, they both represent curiosity, discovery, and a deeper understanding of life. No matter how much I studied microbiology, my love for art remained unshaken. Over the years, I have worked tirelessly to refine my artistic skills, creating works that not only capture beauty, but also tell profound stories.

Art with a purpose

While I create customized artworks for individuals through my art page, @dwin.arts, my true artistic identity is rooted in storytelling. Many of my pieces carry powerful messages about love, social issues, and health awareness – topics that are often overlooked or stigmatized. My work aims not simply to please the eye, but to challenge perceptions, provoke thought, and encourage dialogue.

One of my most significant milestones was participating in the Kazh Exhibition, where I had the opportunity to shed light on an issue that is rarely discussed openly: women’s health and societal judgment. My featured artwork depicted a woman struggling with sexually transmitted infections, both her battle with the disease itself as well as the challenge of dealing with negative societal and familial stigma. The piece served as a bold statement about how misconceptions and judgments about an illness can sometimes be more damaging than the illness itself.

The impact of this work led to an interview with Kurdsat TV, where I discussed the importance of breaking taboos and fostering empathy in our communities. The exhibition was attended by several influential figures, including Governor of Erbil Omed Khoshnaw and key representatives from women’s rights organizations, adding even more weight to the discussion of these topics.

Recognition and media presence

As my work gained attention, media outlets began recognizing my efforts. One of the defining moments of my journey was being interviewed by Rudaw, Kurdistan’s most prominent news channel. In this interview, I shared my personal story and how I turned my childhood passion into a meaningful career despite societal skepticism.

Another major project that I contributed to was an anti-tobacco awareness campaign, where I created an impactful art piece highlighting the dangers of smoking. This led to yet another interview, where I spoke about the role of art in public health advocacy.

A journey of persistence and self-belief

The road has not always been easy. Many people told me that art was a waste of time, that it would never be a sustainable career, and that I should focus on something “more practical.” But I never let those voices define me. Instead, I used them as fuel to push forward.

Through my art page, @dwin.arts, I began sharing my work with the world. Slowly but surely, people took notice. Orders started coming in, interviews followed, and most importantly, my message started reaching people with whom it truly resonated.

For me, art is more than just a profession; it is my safe space, my creative sanctuary, and my way of making a difference. Every brushstroke carries a piece of my soul, and every artwork tells a story worth sharing.

This is just the beginning. The journey continues, and I am eager to see where it takes me next.

A message to young artists and dreamers

To all the young artists, creatives, and dreamers out there – never let doubt or discouragement stop you from pursuing what you love. Talent alone is never enough; it takes dedication, persistence, and the courage to stand by your passion, even when others don’t yet see its value.

No dream is too big if you’re willing to put in the effort. Keep creating, keep learning, and never be afraid to take up space in this world. The journey may be tough, but the reward of doing what you truly love is worth every challenge along the way. Believe in yourself, and one day, the world will believe in you too.
