PM Barzani Arrives in Qatar to Build Stronger Ties

Kurdistan Regional Government Prime Minister Masrour Barzani arrived in Qatar on Monday and met with Qatar’s Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed Bin Abdulrahman al-Thani.

“I am in Doha on an official visit today and I had the pleasure of meeting H.E. Prime Minister @MBA_AlThani_,” Prime Minister Barzani posted on X. “We are aligned on building on the strong friendship between our peoples and expanding our ties across sectors. We also exchanged views on developments in Iraq and the region.”

According to a KRG readout, both officials exchanged views on strengthening relations between the Kurdistan Region and Qatar.

The Peninsula, a Qatari English language daily newspaper, reported that Qatar’s Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs stressed the “State of Qatar’s keenness to enhance the prospects of cooperation with the Kurdistan Region of Iraq in various fields, in a way that serves mutual interests.”

Prime Minister Barzani also met with Chairman of the Qatar Investment Authority Sheikh Bandar bin Mohammed bin Saoud al-Thani, and its CEO Mohammed Saif al-Sowaidi and discussed investment opportunities in KRG priority sectors such as banking, energy, infrastructure, and others.

Qatar has strong ties with the Kurdistan Region and appointed its first consul general to the region in 2023. It has invested in the Kurdistan Region and provided aid to internally displaced persons after the ISIS attack on the region in 2014.

On May 26, 2024, KRG Prime Minister Barzani, Secretary-General of Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ahmed Hassan al-Hammadi, and Qatar’s Ambassador to Iraq Sultan bin Mubarak al-Kubaisi jointly presided over the opening ceremony of Qatar’s Consulate General in Erbil.

“We invite Qatari investors to visit the Kurdistan Region and carry out projects in various fields, and we in the KRG are ready to provide any facilities in this field,” Prime Minister Barzani said at the inauguration event.

The first shipment of Kurdistan’s agricultural exports arrived in the Qatari market in 2023. The KRG has also held talks with Qatari officials regarding industry, banking, and renewables.

Prime Minister Barzani also met with Qatar’s Minister of State for Energy Affairs Saad bin Sherida al-Kaabi in Doha on Tuesday, in which they discussed ways to strengthen energy relations between the Kurdistan Region and Qatar.
