Qatar to Open Consulate General in Erbil

Secretary-General of Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs Dr. Ahmad Hassen al-Hammadi arrived in Erbil on May 24 to meet with Head of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Department of Foreign Relations Safeen Dizayee, and to officially inaugurate Qatar’s Consulate General in Erbil on May 26.

“Welcomed the Qatari delegation led by Ministry of Foreign Affairs SG Ahmad Hassen Al-Hammadi, at [Erbil International Airport],” Dizayee said in a post on X on May 24.

“Their visit will include meetings with key leaders in [the Kurdistan Region] and opening of the Consulate General of the State of Qatar in Erbil.”

Secretary-General Al-Hammadi, accompanied by Qatar’s Ambassador to Iraq Sultan bin Mubarak Al-Kubaisi and Consul General Hussein Al Fadala, met with Kurdistan Region President Masoud Barzani on May 25, and discussed improving bilateral ties.

Qatar appointed its first consul general in 2023 and has strong bilateral operations with the Kurdistan Region, investing in the Kurdistan Region and providing aid and assistance to displaced persons and refugees after ISIS attacked the region in 2014.

KRG Prime Minister Masrour Barzani on February 16, 2022, met with Qatar’s Emir Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani in Qatar and discussed trade and investment ties.

In December 2023, the KRG exported its first-ever shipment of 500 tons of apples to Qatar, overseen by the Prime Minister’s Office and the Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources.

On April 28, Qatar also condemned a deadly drone attack on the Khor Mor gas field that killed four Yemeni workers.
