Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Prime Minister Masrour Barzani on Wednesday inaugurated the Gomaspan Dam and also laid the foundation stone for the Gomaspan-Smaquli Road.
The Gomaspan Dam, constructed with the help of Erbil-based construction company SENK Group, is the largest dam in Erbil Governorate, and the third largest dam in the Kurdistan Region, with an expected reservoir storage of 115 million cubic meters.
In his speech, Prime Minister Barzani pointed out that this dam will significantly contribute to promoting tourism in the region, improving the local climate, and developing fish stocks. Most importantly, it will become a key tourist area around Erbil, allowing all the people of the Khoshnawati Valley and surrounding areas to benefit from it.
“Gomaspan is the largest dam we’ve built to date, with bigger ones to come,” he also wrote in a post on X.

The Gomaspan-Smaquli road will now be rebuilt too. Far too many accidents have happened on this road.
That’s our legacy: infrastructure, water security and economic diversification. pic.twitter.com/AXrFKYtxBF

The dam will provide water for 16,000 square meters of agricultural land and also foster the development of fish farming.
The KRG’s Ninth Cabinet has prioritized ensuring water security for the Kurdistan Region and has built several dams and ponds with the aim to sustain water resources amid the increasing impact of climate change and droughts. It has also undertaken several projects to develop agriculture and tourism in the region.
