KRG PM Praises Peshmerga Reform Process

Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Prime Minister Masrour Barzani on Monday chaired a meeting to review progress and accelerate ongoing reforms within the Ministry of Peshmerga Affairs (MoPA), particularly the unification of Peshmerga forces.

According to the KRG readout, Prime Minister Barzani praised the progress achieved so far, stressing the importance of completing the reform process and ensuring its long-term success. The meeting produced a series of key decisions designed to expedite reforms.

Furthermore, it was decided to unify the accounting units of all Peshmerga formations into a single unit under the MoPA. This unified unit will operate under the supervision of the KRG Ministry of Finance and Economy, in full compliance with relevant laws and regulations.

Peshmerga troops are split between political factions, with 70 units under the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan and 80 units under the Kurdistan Democratic Party. The goal of the Peshmerga reform project is to unite these units as Regional Guard Brigades under the MoPA by September 2026.

The Peshmerga reform project is backed by several countries, including the United States, the UK, Italy, Germany, and the Netherlands.

The KRG meeting also agreed to move forward with restructuring and reorganizing the Peshmerga forces in line with the government’s broader reform agenda.

The meeting also called on Baghdad to equalize the salaries and financial entitlements of the Peshmerga with those of the Iraqi army, underscoring that, under the Iraqi constitution, the Peshmerga are an integral part of the country’s defense system and must have all their constitutional rights and benefits guaranteed accordingly.
