Serious Crash Threatens Future of Kurdish Race Team

The Catalan Kurdish race driver Isaac Tutumlu suffered a severe crash during the latest GT World Challenge race with the Kurdistan Racing Team at Circuit Magny-Cours, France, last month on August 2, when another car pushed him into a concrete wall at high speed.

As a result of the damages to his car, he might have to withdraw from championship rounds in Valencia, Abu Dhabi, and Dubai, Tutumlu told Kurdistan Chronicle.

Tutumlu sustained multiple injuries, including four broken ribs, an ankle and shoulder sprain, and a minor scapular fracture. While none are life-threatening, recovery will require time and patience, the race drive said.

Before the accident, Tutumlu had enjoyed a successful season, securing two podium finishes in Zandvoort and Misano, proudly bringing the Kurdistan flag to international racing podiums. At Magny-Cours, the team was a strong contender for victory, being the fastest car on track prior to the incident.

In a letter on July 21, Manuel Avino, President of the Royal Spanish Automobile Federation, praised Tutumlu for his race results at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli with the Kurdistan Racing Team.

“Your second place in Sunday’s race, after a performance as solid as it was courageous at the wheel of the McLaren 720S GT3 Evo, reflects not only your talent and ability as a driver, but also the effort, perseverance, and spirit of improvement that you have demonstrated season after season.”

“I’m bruised and sore from the heavy impact, which was caused by the same driver who was already involved in a similar incident at Misano two weeks ago. I had just overtaken him and was clearly much faster when he deliberately sent me into the wall,” explained the Kurdistan Racing driver, later, on the accident.

“I was by far the fastest on track in the Bronze Cup at that moment and we had victory within our grasp. We’re going to meet with the organizers because it’s unacceptable that the same driver continues to create these dangerous situations.”

Now, Tutumlu faces additional challenges: financial disputes with McLaren may force him to withdraw from the remaining championship rounds in Valencia, Abu Dhabi, and Dubai.

“Our next race is in Valencia on September 20. So physically, I think I will be able to make it. But the problem comes with the financial situation. Since the crash I had in Circuit Magny-Cours, the car was completely damaged, the engine, the chassis, the gearbox, the differential and everything,” he told Kurdistan Chronicle. “So they need to get a new car, which is going to be secondhand, because there is not any other car available, and there’s only a small insurance that is covering part of the damage, not everything, and we have to cover the rest.

“So if we are not able to cover this financial situation, we will have to withdraw from the last race, from the finale in Valencia, and close the team.”
