In a video filmed in front of the new U.S. Consulate, Wendy Green, the new U.S. Consul General in Erbil, underlined how the building is a testament to the strength of the United States’ partnership with the Kurdistan Region.
Green, who is originally from Texas, was recently appointed to replace outgoing U.S. Consul General Steven Bitner.

“As part of that effort, I look forward to opening the new U.S. Consulate General here in Erbil and as you can see behind me, we are really close to completion. The new consulate is not just a building, but a testament to the strength of our partnership and the importance of the United States relationship with the Kurdistan Region,” she said.
“I look forward to spending the next two years in the Kurdistan Region working to further build the U.S.-Kurdish partnership. I’m eager to partner with you to deepen our security, economic, educational, and cultural ties. Together we can help strengthen the Kurdistan Region for the benefit of both our people.”
The $800 million U.S. Consulate in Erbil will be the largest U.S. consulate in the world.
On May 12, Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Prime Minister Masrour Barzani visited the new building, which is expected to be opened this year.

In February, Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani met with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio at the Munich Security Conference and invited him to attend the upcoming inauguration of the U.S. Consulate General building in Erbil.

“This opening of the new and largest U.S. consulate in Erbil … later this year … reflects the United States’ commitment to the Iraqi Kurdistan Region,” U.S. Department of State spokesperson Tammy Bruce told reporters on March 31.
“The new consulate will strengthen our partnership and diplomatic cooperation with the KRG and the Government of Iraq on shared priorities and challenges, including countering extremism and fostering long-term peace.”
