KRG PM Barzani to Visit Washington

Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) spokesperson Peshawa Hawramani told reporters in a press conference on Wednesday that KRG Prime Minister Masrour Barzani will visit the United States in the coming days.

According to Hawramani, during the visit, Prime Minister Barzani will hold a number of important meetings with U.S. officials. Further details about the visit will be announced later.

Prime Minister Barzani’s last official visit to Washington, D.C., was in February 2024, when he met with senior U.S. officials from the Biden administration.

Prime Minister Barzani has also established strong ties with the Trump administration and has received several calls from senior U.S. officials over the past few months.

In a phone call on April 12, Prime Minister Masrour Barzani and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio discussed the importance of strengthening the friendship and alliance between the Kurdistan Region and the United States.

Moreover, U.S. Consul General Steve Bitner hosted Prime Minister Barzani on Tuesday for a tour of the new U.S. consulate compound, which will be one of the largest U.S. consulates in the world once it opens.

“The new compound demonstrates the United States’ strong commitment to our relationship with the people of the Iraqi Kurdistan Region, and we look forward to moving in soon,” U.S. Consul General Bitner posted on X

U.S. Department of State spokesperson Tammy Bruce told reporters on March 31 that the new U.S. consulate “will strengthen our partnership and diplomatic cooperation with the KRG.

“This opening of the new and largest U.S. consulate in Erbil … later this year … reflects the United States’ commitment to the Iraqi Kurdistan Region.”
