President Barzani Discusses SDF-Damascus Negotiations

During a phone call with the Commander-in-Chief of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) Mazloum Abdi on Wednesday, President Masoud Barzani discussed the recent agreement between the SDF and Damascus.

The Barzani Headquarters said that during the call, Commander Abdi provided President Barzani with an explanation of the details and results of his visit to Damascus and the understandings reached with the Syrian government.

The call also emphasized the need to support any step that contributes to achieving peace and stability in Syria. The need for a unified Kurdish position within the political process in Syria was also emphasized, the Barzani headquarters said.

On March 10, SDF Commander Abdi and Syrian interim president Ahmad al-Sharaa reached an eight-point deal to integrate the SDF into the new Syrian government.

The agreement was also welcomed by Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani on March 11.

“We extend our heartfelt congratulations to our brothers in Syria on the recent agreement reached between the Syrian president and the commander of the SDF. This agreement represents a constructive roadmap for the future and establishes a suitable transition period,” President Nechirvan Barzani said in the statement.

The Kurdish leadership in Iraqi Kurdistan has supported the Syrian Kurds to bring Kurdish parties together in Syria after the fall of the Assad regime, and the takeover of Damascus by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham.
