Kurdistan Region President to Meet Turkish Counterpart in Ankara

Kurdistan Region Presidency Spokesperson Dilshad Shahab announced on Tuesday that Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani is scheduled to meet with Turkiye’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Ankara on Wednesday, October 16, 2024, as part of an official visit.

The two officials will reportedly discuss the advancement of Turkiye’s relations with Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, as well as the recent developments in the wider region, while also sharing perspectives on other issues of mutual interest.

The last time President Nechirvan Barzani met with President Erdogan was when he traveled to Iraq and the Kurdistan Region in April 2024 – the first visit in 13 years.

President Nechirvan Barzani, alongside Kurdistan Regional Government Prime Minister Masrour Barzani, personally received President Erdogan at the Erbil International Airport upon his arrival on April 22.

“We had very fruitful, favorable, and sincere talks in Erbil following our visit to Baghdad. I once again offered my gratitude to our Iraqi brothers, who welcomed us with affection,” President Erdogan told reporters on May 6.

Ahead of the visit on April 22, President Barzani underlined that President Erdogan’s historic visit to Baghdad and Erbil came at a critical time in the region.

“It highlights the strong political, economic, and security ties between Iraq and the Kurdistan Region with Turkiye.”
