Federal Government Needs to Implement Sinjar Agreement: Interior Minister

Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Minister of Interior Reber Ahmed on Wednesday said that the federal government of Iraq should implement the Sinjar Agreement, as no concrete action has been taken since its signing in 2020.

“The KRG remains ready to fulfill its obligations, but federal authorities have yet to act—especially in removing illegal armed groups and forming a local police force,” Minister Ahmed underlined in a post on X.

“We call on the federal government and the international community to fully implement the agreement and end the suffering of the Yezidi community in internally displaced person (IDP) camps. Yezidi IDPs deserve a dignified return and a stable, normalized Sinjar.”

In October 2020, Iraq and the KRG signed the Sinjar Agreement with the support of the UN, aimed at revitalizing and stabilizing the situation in Sinjar and allowing the return of IDPs.

The Yezidi genocide perpetrated by ISIS in August 2014 in Sinjar resulted in the deaths of thousands of people, with many more being displaced to camps in the Kurdistan Region.

However, the Sinjar Agreement has not yet been implemented and over 100,000 Yezidis remain displaced in camps in the Kurdistan Region because of ongoing security concerns in Sinjar.
