The Kurdistan Film Commission will hold a film screening in cooperation with the consulate generals in Erbil of the Netherlands, Germany, and Canada between August 6 and 9 at the Empire Cinema in Family Mall, Erbil.
“The Dutch Consulate General is promoting a Kurdish film from Kurdish filmmaker Reber Dosky, who lives in the Netherlands, in collaboration with the German and Canadian Consulates,” Kurdistan Film Commission Director Kae Bahar told Kurdistan Chronicle on the sidelines of a press conference at Le Daff Restaurant in Ankawa on July 28. “They asked the Kurdistan Film Commission to oversee and organize this event.”
Dosky’s film Daughters of the Sun will be shown at the screening. The red carpet ceremony will take place on August 6 at 6:00 pm, followed by a press conference with Dosky and three Yezidi survivors. The film will also be screened on August 7-9 at 7:00 pm at the Empire Cinema.
The event commemorates the 10th anniversary of the Yezidi genocide perpetrated by ISIS in August 2014, in which more than 5,000 Yezidis were killed and over 6,000 Yezidis were kidnapped.
“These will be free screenings of the film, which deals with a horrendous but very important subject matter, and is especially important during the 10-year-anniversary of the Yezidi genocide,” Kae Bahar added.
He stated that the work of the Kurdistan Film Commission, which has not been officially launched yet, is essential since the ultimate aim of the Kurdistan Regional Government is to establish a film industry in Kurdistan, and the Film Commission represents the first step toward that.
“The Kurdistan Film Commission aims to create a bridge between the international film industry and the region. Until now, we have been forgotten and detached, with no part in the international film community. In order to change that, we have decided to establish a film commission to attract various production companies and global institutions, and encourage filming in Kurdistan,” he concluded.
