On Wednesday, Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Prime Minister Masrour Barzani joined President Masoud Barzani in calling on lawmakers who did not attend today’s session of the Kurdistan Region Parliament to participate in future parliamentary sessions.

“I hope that in the coming days, other members of parliament will participate in parliamentary sessions and fulfill their legitimate national and moral duties and live up to the trust placed in them by their voters and fulfill the responsibilities entrusted to them,” KRG Prime Minister Barzani said.

“I call on all parties to come forward for the sake of our national interests, together, to serve our people and homeland better, and protect our constitutional achievements.”

He also congratulated the elected Speaker, the Deputy Speaker and the Secretary of the sixth term of the Kurdistan Region Parliament and the members of parliament that attended today’s session.“This step is the success of the will of the people of Kurdistan. Reconvening the parliament is a commitment to the implementation of the democratic process in our region.”

The Kurdistan Region has been without an active parliament for two years despite holding elections on October 20, 2024.

On Wednesday, 52 members of parliament, including the Kurdistan Democratic Party members, managed to activate the Kurdistan Region Parliament by reaching the legal quorum of 51 parliament members. Members of the rival Patriotic Union of Kurdistan and a number of opposition parties did not attend the parliament meeting.
