On Thursday, Kurdish fighter Farshad Gardakaneh became a four-time European Champion in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu No-Gi, competing at 97.5 kg.

“This achievement is more than a personal victory — it is a moment of pride for Kurdistan and a message to every young Kurdish athlete who dares to dream big,” Gardakaneh told Kurdistan Chronicle.

“I want the next generation to see that a Kurdish fighter can rise to the highest levels of international sport. I fight not only for myself, but to represent the strength, resilience, and fighting spirit of my people. While many athletes spend their entire lives dreaming of a European podium, I have reached the top of Europe four times.”

Gardakaneh said he is now preparing for the World Championship in Las Vegas next month.“I hope my achievement will receive greater recognition and support. I want to continue fighting without financial uncertainty and show the world what Kurdish athletes are capable of achieving.”

Gardakaneh, who is 30 years old, lives in Belgium and was previously crowned the European champion in the 94-kg division at the January 2025 European IBJJF Jiu-Jitsu Championship held in Lisbon, Portugal.
