On Sunday, the Kurdish team Amedspor from Diyarbakır — known as Amed in Kurdish — defeated the top Turkish team Beşiktaş 3-2, climbing for the first time in the team’s history to first place in the Turkish Süper Lig.

During the match, Gift Orban put Amedspor ahead in the 13th minute, followed by Dia Saba’s goal in the 21st. 

Dusan Vlahovic pulled one back for Beşiktaş in the 55th minute, but Furkan Soyalp restored Amedspor’s two-goal lead three minutes later. Orkun Kökçü scored a penalty in the seventh minute of stoppage time, but Amedspor held on for the victory.

Amedspor was promoted to the highest Turkish football league in May, and so far has performed very well.

“Under head coach Besnik Hasi, Amedspor has shown that these successful victories were not accidental,” Ali Fikri Işık, the author of the book Amedspor: Chaos and Resistance, told Kurdistan Chronicle previously. 

“The team now has a playing system and is no longer struggling to implement it.”
