On Sunday, the International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances, Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Coordinator for International Advocacy Dindar Zebari said that, after the Yezidi genocide in August 2014, the fate of 2,526 Yezidi Kurds is still unknown.

This includes 1,215 women and 1,311 men.

On August 3, 2014, ISIS overran the predominantly Yezidi town of Sinjar and abducted thousands of women and children after executing thousands of men.

Zebari noted that, following the ISIS attacks, the KRG took a number of measures to support victims and their families, including the rescue of 3,595 abducted persons and the provision of psychological and financial support to survivors.

Moreover, Zebari stated that 93 mass graves, along with a number of individual graves, have been discovered so far in Sinjar and surrounding areas.

Zebari underlined the importance of strengthening international cooperation with the KRG and the government of Iraq in searching for missing persons, recovering human remains, identifying victims, and developing legal and institutional mechanisms to prevent enforced disappearances in the future.
