US, EU, UK Strongly Condemn Attacks on KRG PM Office

On Monday, the United States, the UK, the EU Delegation to Iraq, and the embassies of EU member states strongly condemned the attacks on the office of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Prime Minister Masrour Barzani that occurred earlier that day.

Ambassador Tom Barrack, U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Türkiye and Special Presidential Envoy for Syria and Iraq, strongly condemned the Iranian drone attack “on our friend and valued Kurdish partner, Kurdistan Region Prime Minister @masrourbarzani, and his office in Erbil.

“Such aggression against our trusted Kurdish allies is unacceptable and a direct threat to regional stability. We will not condone or tolerate these hostilities. We fully support Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi’s leadership in restoring Iraq’s full sovereignty and ensuring all weapons and security forces remain under the authority of the Iraqi state,” he underlined.

The UK Consulate General in Erbil posted that the UK strongly condemns the attack.

“We will continue to urge de-escalation and to support efforts to protect stability in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.”

In a letter to KRG Prime Minister Barzani, KRG Deputy Prime Minister Qubad Talabani, and Iraqi Prime Minister al-Zaidi, the EU and its member states underlined that these attacks aim to undermine the efforts of the government of Iraq and of the Kurdistan Region to keep the country out of regional conflicts and to find peaceful solutions through diplomatic initiatives.

“It is unacceptable to target state institutions, its officials, or diplomatic missions,” the letter said.

“The EU and its member states will continue to support Iraq including the Kurdistan Region on its path to a peaceful and prosperous future. Bringing all arms under the control of the state will contribute to this endeavour.”
