Iraqi National Security Advisor Qasim al-Aboudi arrived in Erbil on Saturday to chair a meeting of the High Committee tasked with implementing the 2023 joint security agreement between Iraq and Iran.

In March 2023, the two countries signed a deal that included disarming Iranian Kurdish opposition groups and bolstering border security.

“The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) remains fully committed to border security, preventing infiltration, and maintaining regional stability through close coordination with the Federal Government,” KRG Minister of Interior Reber Ahmed posted on X.

According to the Iraqi News Agency, the committee discussed “the details and provisions of the joint security agreement between Iraq and Iran, particularly regarding border security, preventing infiltration and smuggling, and maintaining security and stability throughout Iraq.”

Al-Aboudi was also received by President Masoud Barzani, and the two officials discussed the latest security and political developments in the region, as well as cooperation and coordination between the KRG and the Iraqi federal government in the areas of stability and addressing risks and threats.
