On Saturday, Mahmoud Mohammed, spokesperson for the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) told reporters that the KDP has intensified efforts to form a new government in the Kurdistan Region.

“Efforts to convene a meeting among the political parties are ongoing. Since the elections, we in the KDP have intensified our efforts in this regard and continue to do so, as we believe it is necessary to remove the obstacles hindering the reactivation of parliament and the formation of the new government cabinet,” he said.

“Our efforts are also aimed at honoring the trust that citizens have placed in the KDP and other political parties by working to reactivate parliament and form the government. For this reason, our efforts have continued and will continue going forward.”

The most recent Kurdistan Region parliamentary election was held on October 20, 2024, with the KDP leading with 39 seats, followed by the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) with 23 seats and the New Generation Movement with 15.

However, no new government has been formed since the election, as negotiations between the ruling KDP and PUK have failed to make significant progress toward forming a new administration.

Kurdistan Regional Government Prime Minister Masrour Barzani told reporters on July 27 that the KDP believes that “reactivating the parliament and forming a government is, above all else, in the supreme interest of the people of Kurdistan.

“However, the ultimate responsibility rests heavily on the political parties that, as representatives, hold the mandate of the voters. Therefore, I reiterate what I have advocated since day one: the parliament must commence its work promptly, and a government must be formed that genuinely reflects the feelings and aspirations of the people of Kurdistan.”
