On Monday, UAE-based Dana Gas announced that it would gradually resume production at the Khor Mor gas field, a week after it suspended production due to security risks amid ongoing drone attacks.

“We have made serious efforts with both the federal government and the company itself to resume and increase their gas production,” Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Prime Minister Masrour Barzani told reporters on Monday. “Citing security risks, they state they have reduced their output.

“We hope this threat dissipates, allowing them to resume full gas production in the near future, which will have a positive impact on both fuel and electricity availability.”

Shortly after, Dana Gas informed the market that, following updated assessments of the situation and clear assurances received from the highest levels of the KRG and Iraqi governments, the production level at Khor Mor will be carefully and gradually increased to support the local electricity needs of citizens in the Kurdistan Region and other parts of Iraq.

KRG Prime Minister Barzani also told reporters that the Kurdistan Region is looking for defense systems to prevent future attacks on the Kurdistan Region, including on its oil and gas fields.

“We don’t have adequate defense systems against incoming drones or missiles. We have asked for adequate protection for all of our peoples and institutions. We are still trying to get those weapons and those systems in place. So far, the U.S.-led Coalition has been providing protection because of their presence.” 

During the recent drone attacks there have been no confirmed attacks on Kurdish oil and gas fields. Nevertheless, a number of companies have suspended their production, including HKN, Gulf Keystone Petroleum, and ShaMaran Petroleum.
