On Sunday, Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Prime Minister Masrour Barzani called for the end of the war in the Middle East after the Kurdistan Region was targeted by several drone and missile attacks this week.

“It is clear that tensions in the Middle East continue, and as you have seen, unfortunately we have often suffered the consequences, despite not being a party to the war and tensions currently affecting the region,” KRG Prime Minister Barzani said during the inauguration of the Balinda-Barzan potable water project, which will provide water to several villages in the region of Barzan and Akre.

Regional Conflict

“We reiterate once again that the Kurdistan Region is not part of these conflicts, and we do not want to become involved in the confrontation and war taking place in the region. We hope that peace and stability will once again prevail, and that the fighting and bloodshed will come to an end.

“Every country expects that other countries will not become a source of danger or a threat to its national security. We make the same demand. We do not want the Kurdistan Region to be threatened by anyone, nor do we want the continued instability, killings, arrests, threats, bombardments, and ongoing attacks against the Kurdistan Region to continue without justification.”

“I hope these attacks will stop, because war, killing, and violence benefit no one. Expanding this conflict will ultimately harm all sides. Therefore, we continue to condemn these attacks against the Kurdistan Region and the region as a whole, and we hope they will come to an end so that peace and stability can once again return to all the peoples of the Middle East.”

Baghdad Relations

Prime Minister Barzani also underlined that a good relationship has developed between the KRG and the Iraqi federal government since the formation of a new government in May by Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi.

“The KRG has consistently supported the new Prime Minister, Ali al-Zaidi. We will continue to support him in implementing the constitution and improving relations between Erbil and Baghdad.

“Our demand has always been that Baghdad implement the constitution without discrimination, and that the people of Kurdistan, like all Iraqis, fully benefit from all of their constitutional rights, without any distinction or unequal treatment,” he said.

He also expressed support for the anti-corruption campaign launched by the Iraqi Prime Minister al-Zaidi in May and June.

“The KRG has been a key supporter of the Prime Minister in carrying out this difficult responsibility, and we hope he succeeds. We also hope that Iraq’s economic, political, and security conditions will improve day by day. Without doubt, the Kurdistan Region will remain an essential part of these efforts.

“We hope that the Kurdistan Region’s constitutional rights will be fully implemented, and that past efforts to create differences between the Kurdistan Region and the rest of Iraq will come to an end. Our request to the Prime Minister and the new government is simply that the constitution be implemented as it is written.”

Government Formation

Moreover, Prime Minister Barzani asked all political parties to put the interests of the people, the Kurdistan Region, and the region’s achievements above personal interests, reiterating a call for Kurdish political parties to reactivate the Kurdistan Region Parliament.

More than a year and a half after the Kurdistan Region’s parliamentary elections on October 20, 2024, a new coalition government has still not been formed due to ongoing differences between the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan.

“Despite the KDP fulfilling its responsibilities by respecting the will of the voters, supporting the activation of parliament, and working toward the formation of a government, obstacles have unfortunately remained. Parliament has not resumed its work, and no government has been formed. The main victims of this situation are the people.

“Once again, we call on all political parties: if they are sincere and truly care about the people of Kurdistan, they should come forward and reactivate the Kurdistan Parliament, which belongs to the people of Kurdistan. Parliament should not be held hostage by anyone for personal gain or used to obstruct public service or the formation of the KRG.”
