On Wednesday, senior Kurdish leaders congratulated members of the Yezidi religious group on the occasion of the Yezidi New Year, and underlined that the Kurdistan Region will stand by their rights.
“I extend my warmest congratulations to all Êzidî sisters and brothers in Kurdistan and throughout the world. I wish them happiness, peace, and prosperity,” President Masoud Barzani said in a post on X.
“Our Êzidî sisters and brothers are an authentic and inseparable part of the people of Kurdistan. On this occasion, I wish to reaffirm that we have stood—and will always stand—by their side through all hardships and suffering, and we will continue to support all their just and legitimate demands.”

The Yezidi New Year, Carsema Sor (Red Wednesday), falls on the first Wednesday of April. The Yezidis start their new year on Wednesday because, according to their beliefs, the creator made the universe in six days, and on the seventh day, Wednesday – a holy day throughout the year – the Earth took form at Lalish, a particularly sacred religious site for the Yezidis.

Additionally, Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani said that “on this occasion, we once again affirm to our Yezidi sisters and brothers that, as always, the Kurdistan Region will remain a land of coexistence, tolerance, and mutual acceptance for all its components.
“We will also continue to stand as supporters and defenders of their legitimate rights and demands.”
