UN Refugee Agency Representative Commends KRG’s Support for IDPs

On Sunday, Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Minister of Interior Reber Ahmed met with Toby Harward, representative of UNHCR Iraq, who commended the KRG’s exemplary support for asylum seekers and internally displaced persons (IDPs).



“Our discussions focused on the ongoing humanitarian situation, strengthening bilateral coordination, and advancing sustainable solutions for displaced communities,” Ahmed posted on X.


“I also reiterated the KRG’s commitment to supporting UNHCR’s mission and to working closely with international partners to ensure continued protection and stability for those in need.”



“Honored to meet HE Rêber Ahmed; deeply grateful for the pioneering partnership between @UNHCRIraq & #KRG Ministry of Interior, which has provided refugees, asylum seekers & IDPs with access to essential public services,” Harward posted on X.


He also said they had committed to further exploring opportunities for protection and durable solutions for all displaced populations.  


According to an UNHCR report published on March 30, the majority of refugees and asylum-seekers in Iraq live in the Kurdistan Region.


Iraq hosts a total of over 351,000 refugees and asylum-seekers, 88% of whom are Syrians, with 81% of this population residing in the Kurdistan Region, the report said.
