KRG PM Barzani Condemns Attack on Kuwait’s Consulate in Basra

On Wednesday, Kurdistan Regional Government Prime Minister Masrour Barzani called on Baghdad to stop attacks on diplomatic missions in the Kurdistan Region and Iraq after protestors stormed Kuwait’s Consulate General in Basra.

“We strongly condemn in the strongest terms the blatant attack and aggression that targeted the Consulate General of the State of Kuwait in the city of Basra,” he posted on X.

“This act of sabotage constitutes a grave violation of international law and diplomatic conventions, which require the protection of diplomatic missions and the safeguarding of their security.

“We call on the federal government to hold those responsible accountable and to take serious and effective measures to put a definitive end to attacks targeting diplomatic missions in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region.”

Since the outbreak of war on February 28, there have been several attacks on diplomatic missions in both Baghdad and Erbil.

Additionally, several attacks on the U.S. Diplomatic Support Center in Baghdad were carried out by Iranian-backed armed groups on Tuesday night.

Last Sunday, Prime Minister Barzani strongly condemned “heinous attacks by terrorist militias targeting the U.S. Consulate General and civilian areas in Erbil.

“These deliberate acts of aggression pose a grave threat to the security and stability of the Kurdistan Region, Iraq, and the wider region. This is unacceptable.”
