KRG Prime Minister Condemns Attack on Kurdistan Region President's Residence

On Saturday, Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Prime Minister Masrour Barzani condemned the drone attack on the residence of Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani.

“I condemn and denounce in the strongest terms the cowardly drone attack on the residence of Nechirvan Barzani, President of the Kurdistan Region, in Duhok. Once again, we call on the federal government to act on its responsibilities, bring these outlaw criminals to justice, and curb the continued terrorist attacks carried out by these groups,” he said in a statement.

“I also call on the international community and our friends to support the Kurdistan Region in protecting its citizens and safeguarding [its] interests.

“We reserve every right to confront these terrorists, and we will take whatever steps are necessary to protect the Kurdistan Region.”

Furthermore, in a phone call with President Nechirvan Barzani, Turkey’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Hakan Fidan “strongly condemned the drone strike on President Nechirvan Barzani’s residence in Duhok that occurred earlier today, reiterating his country’s commitment to ensuring security and stability in the Kurdistan Region and Iraq.”

Kurdish veteran politician Leyla Zana also condemned the attack. “I express my full solidarity and support to him and to our people in the Kurdistan Region. In these circumstances, our hearts are with them, and we pray to God to protect our people and our country.”

Syrian Democratic Forces Commander-in-Chief Mazloum Abdi condemned the attack on the “residence of the President of the Kurdistan Region, Nechirvan Barzani, and [affirmed] that in the face of threats and attacks, we will always stand by the people and the leadership of the Kurdistan Region.

“The security of Southern Kurdistan (Kurdistan Region of Iraq) is everyone’s responsibility, and its stability is the stability of all Kurds and the wider region.”

Additionally, the EU Ambassador to Iraq Klemens Semtner, along with the embassies of EU member states, strongly condemned the attack carried out today on President Nechirvan Barzani’s residence in Duhok. They also expressed relief that the attack resulted in no casualties.

Ambassador Semtner noted that such irresponsible acts of violence risk further escalating the already sensitive situation in Iraq, particularly in the Kurdistan Region. He emphasized that the perpetrators must be brought to justice, stressing that any attack against state institutions, officials representing Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, or diplomatic missions constitutes a criminal act and cannot be justified.
