Kurdistan Region, UAE Strongly Condemn Second Attack on UAE Consulate

On Saturday, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and the UAE strongly condemned the second attack on the UAE Consulate General in Erbil, which injured two people, and called on Baghdad to rein in the outlawed groups behind the attacks.

It also strongly condemned “any attack against the territory and institutions of the Kurdistan Region and against consulates and diplomatic missions.

“These terrorist and destabilizing attacks carried out against the Kurdistan Region constitute a clear violation of international law and of the territorial sovereignty of the Kurdistan Region and Iraq,” the KRG said.

“They cannot be justified under any circumstances. The federal government must assume its legal responsibility and set limits on those forces, groups, and militias operating outside the law that have become a real threat to the people of the Kurdistan Region and Iraq as a whole.

“As a result of their unlawful attacks and assaults, dozens of people have become victims and significant damage has been inflicted on the Kurdistan Region and Iraq in general.”

The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) also strongly “condemned and denounced the unprovoked terrorist drone attack that targeted the UAE Consulate General in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq for the second time in a week.”

The MoFA stressed that targeting diplomatic missions and premises constitutes a flagrant violation of international norms and laws.

The UAE Consulate said that the attack resulted in injuries to two security personnel and damage to the consulate building.

In a statement on Saturday, the Presidency of the Kurdistan Region also strongly condemned the attack.

“While wishing the injured a speedy recovery, we reiterate that the Iraqi government must fulfill its duty to protect diplomatic missions, prevent the recurrence of such attacks, and identify and punish the perpetrators so that the country’s security and interests are not put at risk.”

The UAE Consulate was also targeted on March 9. No casualties were reported during the incident.
