In a phone call on Monday, Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Prime Minister Masrour Barzani discussed the situation in the Kurdistan Region with Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) Commander-in-Chief General Mazloum Abdi.

The KRG said that the two leaders “discussed the situation in the Kurdistan Region and the developments and tensions in the region, and emphasized the need to maintain security, peace, and stability in the Kurdistan Region and the region in general.”

At the sixth annual Middle East Peace and Security (MEPS) Forum, which took place on November 17-19, 2025, Prime Minister Barzani hosted General Abdi and Kurdish National Council President Mohammed Ismail.

After the event, during a meeting between President Masoud Barzani and General Abdi, Abdi thanked Prime Minister Barzani for his invitation to the forum, where Abdi underlined the importance of dialogue to solve the differences between Syrian Kurds and Damascus.

General Abdi also spoke about President Barzani’s role in efforts to bring Kurdish parties in Syria closer together and to rebuild unity.

In a post on X on January 26, General Abdi said he had contacted Prime Minister Barzani regarding efforts to de-escalate tensions and expressed deep “appreciation for the continued support his government has provided to our people, embodying the spirit of partnership and shared responsibility in these difficult circumstances.”

In January, there was heavy fighting between the SDF and Syrian government forces. Thanks to efforts by the international community and the KRG, an agreement was reached on January 29, which established a ceasefire and integration mechanism, including the appointing of a governor from the SDF.
