On Thursday, Kurdistan Regional Government Prime Minister Masrour Barzani expressed concerns over attacks on Kurdish neighborhoods in the Syrian city of Aleppo.

“The developments in Aleppo, and the targeting of Kurds in an effort to change the demography of the area and create threats to the lives of civilians, raise questions about the authorities in Damascus and the conscience of the international community,” he stated.

“War and violence do not provide fundamental solutions to any problem. No justification or pretext should allow ethnic cleansing. The attacks on Kurdish neighborhoods in the city of Aleppo have deeply concerned us.

“We hope all sides exercise restraint, protect civilians’ lives, and resort to dialogue and negotiations to resolve disputes. We also hope that Syria’s current system of governance will rise to the responsibility of a democratic and inclusive authority for all the people of Syria.”

On Wednesday, President Masoud Barzani warned that the current heavy fighting between Syrian government forces and Kurdish Asayish forces in Aleppo raises the danger of ethnic cleansing against Kurds.

“The dangerous situation and the fighting and violence currently taking place in the city of Aleppo are a source of deep concern. They pose a serious threat to the lives of civilians and innocent citizens and raise the danger of ethnic cleansing against Kurds in that area,” he said.

On Tuesday, heavy clashes broke out between Kurdish forces and Syrian government forces. Fighting continued on Thursday despite efforts to create a ceasefire.

According to local media reports, 10 civilians have been killed and 63 injured so far during the Syrian government force’s assault on the two Kurdish neighborhoods of Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafiya in Aleppo.
