On Tuesday, December 23, 2025, President Masoud Barzani received Mohamed al-Hassan, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General and Head of the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), in a farewell meeting.
The meeting was held on the occasion of the conclusion of the Special Representative’s mandate. During the meeting, UNAMI Head al-Hassan expressed his thanks and appreciation for President Barzani’s continuous support, which contributed to the success and advancement of his mission in Iraq.
For his part, President Barzani thanked UNAMI Head al-Hassan for the efforts he made to confront the challenges in Iraq, and for the UN’s support for advancing the political process and enhancing coordination among Iraq’s political forces and components, with the aim of ensuring stability and prosperity for the people of Iraq.
President Barzani also wished him success in his future endeavors.
In a separate meeting, Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Prime Minister Masrour Barzani also thanked the UN Special Representative for his positive role in supporting the political process and his efforts to promote peace and stability in the Kurdistan Region and Iraq.

UNAMI Head al-Hassan expressed his appreciation for the KRG’s cooperation and strong coordination with UN’s agencies.
They also discussed developments and the situation in Iraq and the wider region.
The UNAMI officially ended its mandate on December 31, 2025 following a request by the Iraqi government.
