Kurdish Leaders Congratulate KDP on Winning 1 Million Votes

President Masoud Barzani on Wednesday congratulated Iraq on the successful completion of Tuesday’s general parliamentary elections, in which the ruling Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) secured over 1 million votes, according to preliminary results.


“On the occasion of the successful completion of the Iraqi Council of Representatives elections, I extend my congratulations to the beloved people of Kurdistan and all of Iraq. I also congratulate the honorable families of the martyrs, the heroic Peshmerga, and all segments of Kurdistani society,” President Masoud Barzani said.


“I would like to express my gratitude to the Party’s leadership, members, cadres, and supporters, as well as to the security institutions and all relevant bodies whose tireless, day-and-night efforts ensured a calm and secure environment for the elections. I hope that this election and its results will help set Iraq on the right path.”


Among the Kurdish parties, the KDP is leading with an expected 29 seats, followed by the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan with 18 seats, and the opposition party Halwest with 5 seats, according to the preliminary results.


Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Prime Minister Masrour Barzani on Tuesday congratulated the KDP as it surpassed the one-million-vote mark, meeting Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani’s campaign challenge.


“Thanks to Almighty God and to the steadfast will of the patriotic citizens of Kurdistan and Party members, the Kurdistan Democratic Party has surpassed one million votes, with the final tally expected to be even higher,” Prime Minister Barzani said. “I extend my congratulations to the president and leader of our people, His Excellency President Barzani.”


According to turnout data, the Kurdish governorate of Duhok recorded the highest participation at 76.06%, while the Shi’a-majority governorate of Najaf had the lowest at 45.93%. Erbil saw a 69% turnout, and Sulaymaniyah 57%.


Iraq’s parliamentary elections saw over 55% voter turnout, with more than 12 million citizens participating, according to the Independent High Electoral Commission, which received results from 99.7% of polling stations.
