The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Ministry of Interior this week called for the implementation of the Sinjar Agreement just ahead of the Iraq parliamentary elections that will be held in Iraq on November 11, 2025.
In October 2020, Baghdad and Erbil signed the Sinjar Agreement with support of the UN in order to facilitate the return of displaced Yezidis.
“Five years have passed since the signing of the Sinjar Agreement, yet none of its administrative, security, or reconstruction provisions have been fully implemented,” the KRG Ministry of Interior said.
“Implementation of the agreement was incorporated into the agenda of the current Iraqi government through the political parties that formed it. Both the KRG and the federal government of Iraq have repeatedly expressed their commitment and made concerted efforts to implement the key provisions of the accord.
The KRG Ministry of Interior blamed certain unlawful groups and individuals as the principal obstacle to its enforcement. “As a result, the suffering of displaced persons continues, their hope of return has faded, and an increasing number are being driven to seek refuge abroad,” the Ministry said.
“The KRG expresses its deep concern over the ongoing plight of the displaced and holds accountable those publicly obstructing the implementation of the Sinjar Agreement, thereby prolonging instability and hardship in the region.”
