Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Prime Minister Masrour Barzani hailed the historical resumption of the Kurdistan Region’s oil exports on Saturday morning.

“After two to three years of halted oil exports from the Kurdistan Region to international markets, today – this very morning – Kurdistan Region’s oil has once again been exported to the global market,” Prime Minister Barzani said.

“This agreement with the federal government is a great achievement for all the people of Iraq, especially the people of the Kurdistan Region.”

Prime Minister Barzani also expressed his appreciation for those who played a role in the negotiations to resume the oil exports, which were halted in 2023 after an arbitration court in Paris ruled in favor of Baghdad in its dispute with Turkey over independent Kurdish oil exports.

“In particular, I want to highlight the role of the United States, both in Washington and through its embassy in Baghdad and its Consulate General here in Erbil, for their significant support in reviving this process.

“Once again, I hope this agreement will become a driving force for advancing the economy and serving all citizens,” he said.

In a phone call on Saturday, KRG Prime Minister Barzani and Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani also highlighted the resumption of Kurdistan Region’s oil exports as an important achievement that benefits all Iraqis.

“Prime Minister @mohamedshia and I agreed that the restart of oil exports from the Kurdistan Region is an important achievement that serves all Iraqis,” Prime Minister Barzani posted on X.

“I called for a fundamental resolution to the salary issue and the financial rights of Kurdistanis.”

Myles Caggins, spokesperson for the Association of the Petroleum Industry of Kurdistan, which represents several oil companies in Kurdistan, told Kurdistan Chronicle that “the visionary leadership from both Prime Minister Barzani and Iraqi Prime Minister al-Sudani were essential to achieving historic and unique written agreements that honor existing contracts and comply with Iraq’s budget law.

“All Iraqis and international oil companies will benefit from oil exports through the Iraq-Turkey Pipeline.

“The U.S. government strongly supported the resumption of oil exports, in part due to the high level of respect and diplomacy from Prime Minister Barzani and his foreign relations minister and staff in Washington” he added.

The Iraqi Ministry of Oil on Saturday also confirmed the resumption of oil exports this morning at 6:00 am without any technical issues, “reflecting the success of joint efforts between the federal government and the KRG in achieving this significant milestone.”

Furthermore, Baz Karim, the founder and CEO of Kurdish energy company Kar Group, in a post on X added that “this step is clear evidence that constructive coordination between the federal government and the KRG benefits our country and our people.”

“We extend our thanks to the Prime Minister, Mr. Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani [and] to the Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region, Mr. Masrour Barzani and to everyone who contributed to this achievement.”
