Erbil’s Water Shortage Solved For Next 30 Years: PM

Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Prime Minister Masrour Barzani on Sunday during a ceremony announced that the KRG has solved Erbil’s water shortage for the next three decades.

“Less than a year ago, we promised to solve Erbil’s water shortage for the next 30 years with a $480 million investment. Today, we delivered on that promise,” Prime Minister Barzani posted on X after the ceremony.

“Clean 24-hour water now flows to neighborhoods in Erbil in the first phase of the Emergency Water Project.”

“Another benefit of this water project is that we will no longer need to extract groundwater in Erbil, which will help raise the water table. Previously, water extraction required many generators, creating pollution. This project helps solve that too. We will see results soon,” Prime Minister Barzani said in his speech.

Apart from the water project, the KRG is also planning to provide 24-hour electricity to the Kurdistan Region through the Runaki initiative, with the plan to reach every home and business by the end of 2026.

“We want every Kurdistan resident to have reliable water and 24-hour electricity – and that’s happening now in most parts of Erbil, Sulaymaniyah, and Duhok. More than 2 million people already have 24-hour electricity, and 80% are now paying less for power,” Prime Minister Barzani said.

“Our plan is to ensure all of Kurdistan has 24-hour power by next year. Claims that some areas lose power because others gain it are false. Implementation takes time, but gradually all areas will be covered. I hope electricity shortages and dependence on noisy generators will soon be part of the past,” Prime Minister Barzani added.
