Former Turkish PM Thanks Barzani For Peace Efforts

President Masoud Barzani on Thursday received Turkiye’s former Prime Minister and leader of Future Party Ahmet Davutoglu, who thanked him for his efforts in supporting the peace process in Turkiye.

In a post on X, the Kurdistan Democratic Party’s (KDP) Foreign Relations Office said the meeting highlighted the peace process in Turkiye and described it as an important and historic step.

“Mr. Davutoglu thanked President Barzani for his support for the peace process and praised his role,” the KDP said.

Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani also met with Davutoglu on Thursday.

According to the Kurdistan Region Presidency, the Kurdistan Region President reaffirmed the Kurdistan Region’s firm commitment to the peace process in Turkiye and expressed readiness to provide all the necessary support to advance it.

He also highlighted the importance of peace and its positive impact on Turkiye and the wider region.

On February 27, the imprisoned Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) leader Abdullah Ocalan made a call for the PKK to disarm as part of a new peace process.

The Iraqi Kurdish leadership has supported this process from the beginning, including during the earlier PKK-Turkiye peace process that collapsed in 2015.

Kurdistan Regional Government Prime Minister Masrour Barzani welcomed the peace process during the Sulaimani Forum on April 17.

“The nationalist party talks about peace and the authorities in Turkiye say this peaceful solution is the best way for development. These are all positive developments, depending on how to treat this situation,” he said, adding that there are some sides that are not interested in developing the peace process.

“But peace cannot be made through one side – all sides of the conflict should be ready to go toward a peaceful solution,” he concluded.

Davutoglu said in an interview with Kurdistan Chronicle on the sidelines of the Middle East Peace and Security Forum in November that he hopes that one day President Masoud Barzani will come back to Turkiye to lend support to a new peace process.

“We should work for that. We can come to Erbil, and he can come to Diyarbakir. There is no difference.”

On November 16, 2013, President Masoud Barzani voiced strong support for Turkiye’s peace efforts during a joint rally  in Diyarbakir with then-Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Kurdish singers Ibrahim Tatlises and Sivan Perwer, urging Kurds and Turks alike to back the peace initiative.
