On April 10, 2025, the American Kurdish Network hosted a Newroz celebration on Capitol Hill, made possible through the generous support of Senator Mark Warner of Virginia. This festive event brought together Kurdish leaders, U.S. policymakers, allies, and representatives from prominent think tanks and universities to commemorate the Kurdish New Year with a rich showcase of art, song, and dance.
“This year’s gathering was especially joyful as it reaffirmed our shared values with our American allies and celebrated Kurdish unity with guests from all parts of Kurdistan,” remarked Haima Askari, Executive Director of the American Kurdish Network.

The evening was adorned with vibrant art displays and traditional tapestry exhibitions, complemented by the sounds of Kurdish music and energetic dancing. Senator Chris Van Hollen of Maryland delivered a keynote address highlighting the significance of the enduring U.S.-Kurdish partnership.
In addition to Senator Van Hollen’s remarks, Treefa Aziz, the Kurdistan Regional Government Representative to the United States, and Sinam Mohamad, the U.S. Representative of the Syrian Democratic Council, emphasized the strength and solidarity of Kurdish leadership across the world. “At a time when Kurds continue to face immense challenges, we’re deeply grateful to everyone who helped make this event possible,” concluded Askari, echoing the sentiments of unity and resilience among the Kurdish community.
This celebration not only marked the arrival of the Kurdish New Year, but also served as a powerful reminder of the enduring bonds between the Kurdish people and their American allies.
