Iraqi PM Meets Kurdish Leaders to Strengthen Baghdad-KRG Cooperation

Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani on Saturday visited Erbil and discussed the relationship between the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and the Iraqi government with Kurdish leaders.

President Masoud Barzani received Iraqi Prime Minister al-Sudani on Saturday and discussed the political situation and the latest developments at the regional level.

The talks also emphasized the importance of coordination between Iraqi parties to overcome crises and challenges and to find solutions to existing problems.

There are ongoing disputes between Baghdad and Erbil over Kurdish oil exports, which have been suspended since 2023; the Iraqi budget; and the payment of government employees in the Kurdistan Region.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio in a phone call on Friday with KRG Prime Minister Masrour Barzani underlined that the reopening of the Iraq-Turkiye Pipeline “immediately is crucial to protecting past U.S. investments and attracting future investment.”

Iraqi Prime Minister al-Sudani was received by Prime Minister Barzani at Erbil International Airport.

“There are challenges on the horizon, but I believe by working together, abiding by the constitution and through honest dialogue, we can achieve lasting prosperity for our peoples,” Prime Minister Barzani posted on X.

According to the readout, both officials “emphasized the need to resolve outstanding issues between the KRG and the federal government in accordance with the Constitution, ensuring the fair distribution of entitlements and protecting the interests of all citizens.”

Furthermore, “they underscored the importance of maintaining Iraq’s stability and security, and resolving disputes through dialogue and peaceful means.”
